Not sure if your 987 has the same shifter cable setup as my 986, but I had the same problem in 3rd gear. The cable itself was fine, it was rather the plastic sheath around it that had worked it's way down and was making shifting difficult (I thought it was just the short shift kit). I was able to fix it by just jacking up the rear, crawling under and puching the sheath back towards the front of the car. Shifted great after that. I plan to replace the cable next time I get the car on a lift though.
