I'd be careful not to run the car at all unless I'm sure its the water pump. Boxsters are known to have IMS issues and could make noises before completely going out.

A handy trick I usually do to verify where the noise is coming from is to use a long metal bar (such as a long screwdriver) pressed up against different engine components, with my ear close to the outer end.
