99 Boxster/Water Pump
 

Can someone please tell me, how or when can I tell if my water pump is going bad? I had replace the waterpump when the car was about 65000 miles and now is about 75000 miles on the car.

if it leaks,makes noise or doesnt move the water its bad...they should go more than 10k

Well! I start notice the noise about three weeks ago and it come from behind the seats. So, I jack the car up last night and notice the noise from waterpump and the coolant were leak from the seal around the waterpump. So, I retide the all the screws. The waterpump itself look's okay. So, I restart the car again and still making noise. But didn't see any leak.

Can it be something else?

if your pump is leaking its bad. you can remove the belt then start the car and listen for the noise. maybe cloud job will read your post....he~s always got sumpin to say

Thanks! I didn't know that I can do what you just told me. I'm kinda new to this and I'm not a machanic. I was just try to do it myself and save some $$$.

IF the pump is leaking just take it to a dealer or a mechanic you know and trust or one that wants to work on the car. if you take the belt off only run the car for less than a minute.

I'd be careful not to run the car at all unless I'm sure its the water pump. Boxsters are known to have IMS issues and could make noises before completely going out.

A handy trick I usually do to verify where the noise is coming from is to use a long metal bar (such as a long screwdriver) pressed up against different engine components, with my ear close to the outer end.

I just did the water pump on my 2003S, first I bought a repair book. From what you wrote, I got two things to say. 1) I would not tighten the bolts unless you do it with a torque wrench, it's only suppose to be 7LBS. Secondly, it there is a noise, just take the water pump out and inspect it, than when you replace it use a metal gasket from Porsche, I got my water pump from Napa Auto.

Good luck, the Boxster is truly a different animal.

I appreciate for all your in puts. But what is IMS and what can I do to provent it become the issue. It's there any I can do?

By the way I got my water pump from NAPA Auto parts also. But I use the sealicon, instead of the meltal gasket. I'll try to check it again this weekend and may have to take the water pump out.

Tran - I'll try your trick and see if I can find where the noise come from.

I bought some water pumps from Duetsche Autp Parts.
3 of the 4 I bought squealed and one only lasted 60 days.

I pulled all three back off the street and replaced them with OEM pumps.

We took the failed pump apart to inspect it and the bearings has already
failed and the shaft was wobbling. Probably just a matter of time for the
others.

Will be sending them back and telling them what they can do with them.

I guess at this point, I just need to go ahead get original part.
