Garage
I have five cars, I still missed driving the truck and should have repaired the timing chain instead of using the event as a launching pad to undertake a significantly more complicated endeavor. Don't get me wrong, I would have done the swap eventually but swaps are never as easy as you think they will be.

Just food for thought.

Check out TPC http://www.tpcsuperchargers.net/

The have a few 986 turbos around, and lots of 987 and 997 turbos. I helped install one on a 987 Cayman S. Its wicked fast, well engineered and well supported.

Some issues

How do you know the engine you buy won't have the same issues? There have been some horror stories.

How do you know that after either spending the $3k for repairs or the $5k for the used motor it won't self destruct 3 days later? Stuff does happen.

What makes you think you and your dad can do a rebuild of the engine for $2k? Either of you ever been inside a M96? (Only person I ever heard of who did it himself without prior experience spent about $4.5k on parts IIRC.)

Used parts? OEM parts? "Improved" parts?

And how much do you replace/upgrade while the engine is out? Clutch? IMS bearing? AOS? Alternator? Water Pump? Idler pulleys? Motor Mounts? and it goes on...

It is a set of difficult decisions. I don't envy you having to make em....and then live with the results.
