It's Cayman with a carbon widebody kit and lots of other goodies...I kind of went off topic, but thought this was an awesome car. I guess when Porsche announces something like the Spyder, you get your hopes up; but it's just another marketing gimmick.

Totally digging the weight reductions and particularly the sports bucket seats! But couldn't they have at least put in a manual roof that's easier to fold up?

like the weight redux but they didnt even try. there is much more body fat on that porker! im mean sure it isnt a heavy car to begin with but if you only cut 174 i dont call that much of a weight reduction.
but i do think its gorgeous.... |
that car is for the guy with money to burn..who only plans to take the car out when the weather is perfect...
for REAL people, who will take the car ona trip, bring the wifey along...and just *might* hit some rain / really cold weather - and woudl wnat to put the top up on the fly...it's useless. the "S" model is a better buy. the extra 10hp and less weight is not THAT much better. it does look cool...but this car is more about marketing and being able to have bragging rights. honestly..it's barely 200 lbs lighter..that's enough to notice..but not so much to make it light years quicker. I think MOSt buyers woudl opt ot have the creature comforts and the extra 200lbs... if I wanted a true racecar..i'd get an old 986 and make a spec racer.... which woud likely eat this new car for breakfast on a track. |
Doesn't the Lomborghini Murcielago Roadster have a ridiculous little roof thing like this that is only for roughly keeping the rain off? Maybe Porsche is just following suit. But like a Lombo roadster with no real top, this Boxster is meant to be a sunny weekend toy, not a daily driver. Who would buy a daily driver without AC or a radio? Absolutely it's pointless for every day use, that was not Porsche's intention!
Yes the weight savings should have been more, but from the styling you can tell where Porsche focused its efforts - the company wanted to make an exciting, wilder version of the Boxster. Most of the effort seems to have been expended on the visual appeal. In that area I feel they succeeded quite nicely. Kirk |
I think Spyder looks great and if you can afford it - go for it.
It is a bit overpriced, kinda like the 911 Sport Classic, which by the way looks amazing. If it were me (Im dreaming here) - I would be putting on that roof when I see a first cloud :) P.S. 170 lbs weight savings is noticable, at least I can notice when I have a passenger. |
A funny observation is that most of the posts here are ho-hum and we seem to like the concept but not the look of the thing. Yet the Cayman guys are posting away how much they love it and some have already ordered it.

My friend has one of the Lambo roadsters and even though the top is a simple canvas cover, it is very tight and a real pain in the *** to put on and take off. You can certainly drive his car in the elements without concern; unlike this simple umbrella that the Spyder comes with. But here again, why would you want to drive the Lambo in the rain? Why would the Cayman guys be attracted to this? |
