The New Boxster Spyder
|
I had to touch myself when I saw it.
|
How many will now be adding the Porsche side stripes to their cars?
176 pounds isn't that great of weight reduction, though I like the concept (always thought the radio wasn't necessary in my car). I think it'd fun to make one lose 400-500 lbs...and stick a Raby 3.6 in it; that would be a screamer! Wonder if they'll jack the price sky high like they did with the 997 Carrera Classic. |
Wow! Nice little package.
Rear LSD, 20mm lower, 320hp 3.4L engine, etc... All this for the same price as a Boxster S! I never use AC in my Boxster, but I surely hope they retained the heat (up here in Ottawa, Canada driving in Nov/Dec can get really cold!) I wonder how much these will be used in 5-6 years? |

Here is another link

$58 for a S with no option vs $61.2 MSRP fully loaded... BUT no roof & no A/C ... chick in the passenger seat may not like that. ;) |
My question is whether my local PCA chapter will allow this car on the track. They don't allow cabs to be on the track with the top down. Will this one pass with the "inclement weather" cover on the car?
Is the direct injection motor still a M96? I'm gonna salivate over whatever they bring out that is mid engine and doesn't have the M96 variant motor in it. (Well, that's not totally true. I won't be panting for a turbocharged four cylinder VW engine that is rumored to be added to the boxster lineup next year) |

are you guys serious?
OK, I like 320 bhp - no problem But otherwise this car looks like a "ricer's dream" to me  And pay $6,000 extra for NO radio NO A/C and no electric top mechanism? I can do that MYSELF MUCH cheaper  |

I'd sign up for one of these....

Waste of time. My .02
|
As someone in the market for his first Box--and considering a newer 987--I too am a bit disappointed in this offering. When I saw the spy videos several months ago I was getting excited. Now that it's out--yes, it looks nice. But as jmatta said, 178lbs isn't really that huge. if you think about it, it's essentially the difference between having a passenger or not. For someone like me--looking for a daily driver---the lack of a true top makes this a deal breaker. I would have actually preferred just a manual top even if that added say 80lbs back---and keep all the other changes they made (e.g. suspension, more hp, speedster humps)...
the search continues.... |
Not a Fan. Looks too 'Busy' for my taste
|
Flat 8?
IMO, if the back had a single smaller hump like the 911, I'd like it a lot! Right now it's ok... Why can't they remove the rear trunk and cram in a flat 8? Now that would be cool!
|
LOL at the photo series showing the car driven into a rainstorm, then getting stuck under an overpass while it pours:

I'm sure it drives like a dream but I'm not a fan of the design.
The word Platypus comes to mind -- a bunch of aftermarket ideas cobbled together to make something that technically works but isn't what anyone would term elegant. |
As I said earlier, if I were in the market, I'd be inclined to purchase a roller earlier S, remove as much weight as possible (see spec racer Boxster site) and stuff a Raby 3.6 in it. You'd have a GT3 killer for a whole lot less than Porsche's marketing gimmick.
I've never been a fan of the humps...it makes the car appear weighty in the wrong spot; and that "rain bonnet" is simply of no use for anything other than garage queens. |
Hey man, my modded 2000 base has an electric top and AC and it weighs at least 100 lbs less than the new Spyder, so what's the big deal. Oh, ya, I forgot, I dont have 320 hp.... :D
Ed  |
I will say I like that they apparently added the cool steering wheel from the 911 Turbo including the paddles for PDK that everyone has been screaming for. still, not enough for me. these will likely end up in future model Boxsters anyway (if they have half a brain).

JEALOUS
–adjective 1. feeling resentment against someone because of that person's rivalry, success, or advantages (often fol. by of): He was jealous of his rich brother. 2. feeling resentment because of another's success, advantage, etc. (often fol. by of): He was jealous of his brother's wealth. It's a REAL man's car. But I like my A/C, stereo and top - I must be a wose :( |
I like the idea of a stripped-down Boxster thats performance tuned and lightened. But I am not wild about the bumps on the back of the Spyder, and when looking for a daily driver, like me, the no-top thing does not make a lot of sense. Still if they wanted to trade me my car for the impractical new Spyder with the funny bumps, I think I could make it work....
Ed  |
Atleast we know what the result is for all the speculation about the Boxster Speedster spyshots we saw a few months ago.
http://www.autoevolution.com/news/spyshots-2011-porsche-boxster-speedster-6174.html I never listen to the radio nor put the AC on when I drive my Boxster so that wouldn't bother me. Looking at the specs though, this lightened Boxster is only marginally faster than an S model. Regardless, if I could afford this I'd love to get it, but this clearly wouldn't work for me in my state's climate. I would have to factor in the cost moving to a warmer place to live! |
ALASKA.. Went skiing there at Hilltop and alyeska a while back.. Had a blast. Pointless post, sorry.. :)

personally i love the new spyder. its gorgeous. and in fact iam jealous too! of course i would want it to lose some more weight but hey keep in mind if they make it too awesome they would cut into 911 sales!
we dont want that....  |
Give me some humps and I got myself a Spyder!!!

I like how the intro makes it sound like the lack of cup holders is a brand new achievement in weight reduction...

The Spyder probably won't sell very well, but it will be one of those ultra rare collector Porsches in 20-30 years. The one piece humps panel look better than having two separate clamshell/trunk lid with the seam in between. I'm surprised though that they couldn't shave more weight. Only 176lbs less than a Cayman with the same 0-60 time on a 6-spd, looks like same engine. |
Stuff a 3.6 or 3.8 in an early car and blow the doors off the new arachnoid.
|
Does anyone know if you can remove the motor from the top and operate it manually?
If so, I'll just buy a 2006/7 ish 987, remove bits and sell on ebay and be 98% there (only better with a real top) and buy an FJ Cruiser I want with the $30k I saved. |
Well, that spyder looks great in pictures but as many people in this thread have said it is pointless for every day use, it has some similarities and look like a Pontiac solstice from the back, I have a boxster and I have the speedster humps that I can put and remove, those things you can remove them in like a minute, so if the rain strikes, just take them off and put the soft top and that´s it, very easy and fast, I prefer my boxter that this boxster spyder, also on the other hand I have a spyder replica in my garage and I like it very much !! but honestly I use that car once a month so it is an expensive toy, I had been thinking many times about selling it but I like it too much, I had so much time and effort invested on that car but honestly is useless, lets not forget that the originally spyder was desinged with one purpose in mind, to race, the new boxster spyder for me is not a race car, it will not defeat a GT3 or any Ferrari, and neither is an every day car, so it looks nice to have it in a garage stored but is useless, it will not sell very well like the boxster or the cayman so maybe is only a collector´s car, and with this crisis I think very few will buy it !!!
Honestly I prefer my spyder even do it is a replica, I will also keep my boxster with speedster humps, also I can add to that that I am putting a zeintop on it, so I can have for winter a cayman and for summer a boxster spyder :D!!! i will only need to get the emblem and the side strips :D!! |
My youngest son (the same one that at 13 came up with the famous DIY zip tie method to replace a 944/951/968 oil pan / gasket) and I looked at this new Spyder and think that it has some design elements of the Carrera GT. Maybe Porsche is trying to envoke some of the GT's vibe and "mojo" in this car.
BTW, we both like it, but than again I also love the new 911GT3 RS with those wild graphics too..... |
|
With spoiler retracted, it is a bit more obvious.
|
Well this owner damn sure knows what he's driving.

Let me get this straight. It doesn't have a real roof???? Just a "fly"?? Security, heat, weather protection?
|
$13K more than the base boxster, lacks a real roof and you have to assemble the roof each time you want it up, lacks AC (except that it shows AC in the on-line ad!!). 10 more HP than the S. I like the speed humps, but I'd pay more for the S (but IT costs less!!).
There have been many times that my power top button has prevented me form getting an untimely bath. The concept is cool, but it just isn't practical except for someone that has money to burn. |
I'll take this instead...complete with GT3 suspension and 3.8 X51 powerplant and a fixed top.
