I bought a Boxster because...... I got a free Mcdonalds happy meal with every Boxster purchased. lol


I bought a boxster because..... I became self employed and wanted something special. I saw a TV show with a boxster on and i looked around at the porsche showroom and it blew me away. I never actually test drove my car untill i picked it up and even now in 2005 i still get the same buzz from the day i picked it up so many years ago.
When i picked it up i didnt expect the amount of attention comming home, EVERYONE was looking. Now i have come used to it of course the kids from 5 year old to 17 year old really like it and thumbs up all the time, the age from 20 - 30 i get verbal abuse which in my view they are trying to say, nice car i wish i had one. I think the 986 is just GREAT! no matter what year.

I got the car because it is the benchmark by which all other roadsters are measured. It doesn't do anything poorly and excels at almost everything.

From a handling perspective, it is hard to fine a better vehicle.

I fell in love with it on the test drive. I even remember where it happened exactly - the switchback on the on-ramp on I-290 from Main street. Settled down in the car, about 75 degrees and sunny, top down, hearing the sound of the intake to the left and behind my head. I just had to have it. Honda S2000s immediately ceased to exist.

my last car was a Miata with many mods.
I was intent on never owning another tin top as my daily driver,
and neither would I ever own a car with more than two seats.
Excellent handling was a must along with low weight.
There were really very few choices honestly, the S2000 before the torque increase wasn't really appealing anymore (although bang for the buck its tops).
The Lotus is just ridiculus expensive for a 1.8 toyota engine. The TT convertible and Nissan Z violate my rule of "retrofitted" roadsters. The (3 liter I think) Z4 was interesting but resale value had me concerned with so many mixed reactions. Sadly not a single US car in the bunch.

Carrera GT no contest.....but that waiting list??? forget it!!
(btw, Carrera GT weighs as much as a Boxster...sick!)

my Boxster musts
1. S (need that 3.2 engine note)
2. Less than 15,000 miles
3. Silver with Red interior, would've of settled for yellow but I REALLY didn't want to deal with a black interior again, yellow and red..mmmmm.
4. manual trans (no compromise)

I drove a Boxster along the coast of NH this past summer on a whim with a buddy of mine after stopping by a dealership.

I have always loved Porsches, but this blew me away.

A month later I owned one, much to the dismay of my finances.

But I gladly pay to be able to drive a car that makes me smile everytime I have to get up and go to work. A friend of mine asked me the other day if I ever minded driving so much...and the fact is, I will always prefer to drive, no matter what...I love it.

I bought a boxster because the first day I saw one on Interstate 10 in 1997 I turned to my wife and said "now THAT's the best looking Porsche I've ever seen... I gotta get one of those."

And just seven short years later, I was able to afford that 1997 Boxster and got one.

S2k's are an awesome sports car for the money even though they may be a tad cramped. Atleast 20k less than a boxster s and almost identical performance to boot. It would probably eat 2.5L's alive at the track when driven by equally skilled drivers, especially one with long straights. Plus, they seem to hold there value well.

I would disgree on the Honda. NO low end, have to rev it like a motorcycle. Cheap looking to boot.

I think it's kinda neat that it makes power up so high in the rev range. I wish the fun didn't stop at 7,200 on mine. BMW makes 6 cylinder engines that rev to 8K rpm and make 333hp or 343 in Europe and still hold decent torque down low. Porsche needs to quit sandbagging on it's engines or maybe get some tips from BMW.

I don't think 240 HP from a 2.7L engine is sandbagging. Having said that, I don't think Porsche is about winning the HP race. Afterall, you can buy a 400 HP Corvette for about 42K. The overall balance and handling of a Boxster is pretty hard to beat.

240hp is nothing to sneeze at, but the honda's lil' 2.0L and now 2.2L 4 banger can crank out just as much hp, albeit less torque, but still very impressive. At the rate Porsche is increasing hp they will never catch up to it's serious competitors. 4 hp here 8 hp there is rediculous. Look at the base C5 to the C6...now a 50hp gain is more like it. Who can feel an 8 hp gain anyway? After taking a ride in a 2002 Zo6 I sometimes second guess my decision to get a boxster s. The acceleration is just brutal and almost scary. It makes my "S" feel as fast as a Metro. Boxster owners are always talking about handling and balance, but the majority of the cars never see an autocross or racetrack. How much handling and balance do people really experience during the daily commute, quick trip to the store, or the cruises around the neighborhood? Where I live you can push the cars acceleration limits alot more than it's cornering limits during alittle cruise time in the car. The best curves in my area consist of on/off interstate ramps. There is no racetrack near me and pushing the cornering limits of my car on public roads is just asking for trouble. I've participated in one autocross and that was fun but hardly enough. I'm not going to be able to do another one until June if I'm lucky. I guess the point is why buy a great handling car when most of the roads around are straight! It makes more sense to buy a fast car like a C6 where you can utilize it's fantastic power EVERYTIME you drive the car.

I used to drive an E36 M3. 240hp/225tq and geared aggressively. Loved the car. When it was time to move on, I wanted something that was everything the M3 was...and a little more. Obvious choice was the E46 M3. Unfortunately, along with its bigger motor came bigger dimensions and bigger weight. It lost its nimbleness.

Having 2 friends with a C5 vert and a C5 Z06, I got to know Corvettes well. They are nice cars for a nice price. I almost bought a C5 Z06 myself. But a little bit of quality (what the C5 lacks in..especially interior) goes a long way in a daily driver for me. Also, the Boxster is quite a bit more nimble. The C5 (and C6) have a fairly long wheelbase for a sports car. The turning radius is 40 feet! That's friggen huge. I had a Mustang GT in high school and it also had a 40ft turning radius. I couldn't make U turns on some streets. Not very nimble. But on the track the Z06 will annihilate the Boxster...you'll get no arguments from me about that.

The S2K doesn't offer anything I'm looking for. A tendency for snap oversteer at the limit, a torque deficient motor, and a cheap interior that's more spartan than their Civic line. The Boxster S has more torque at 2K rpms than the S2K has at peak.!!! Like the Corvettes, more torque equals better driveability. Driven at 10/10ths the S2K is close in performance to the Boxster S. But driven below that and the performance drops off considerably.

I somewhat disagree with Adam in that I use the Boxster's nimble handling every day. I do a lot of city driving and having a "point 'n shoot" car is almost a necessity.

My turn,
I've always liked Porsche's. My friend had an MX-5 and I wanted a convertible. We needed a second car and I worked out what I could afford. I saw a local Porsche specialist in Melbourne - Weltmeister, who told me he would look out for one. Two months later he rang to say he had found the car I was going to buy. On the following Sunday I looked through the window and knew he was telling the truth. I collected the keys two weeks later and haven't looked back.

Like everybody on this board I am always really pleasantly surprised by the positive reactions I get from passers-by and other motorists. Boxsters are and will always be far more special than say a 350Z or a TT or S2k or a Z4.

BTW, don't you think the TT is looking very old fashioned all of a sudden?

I drove a VTEC Integra for almost six years, and an RSX type-S for a year and a half after that. The high revving character of a VTEC engine is fantastic - it's a sound and character you're not likely to get on the low side of a Ferrari F355. The Integra GS-R, in particular, was a fantastic car.

The problem with the VTEC engines is that they're not much fun on the street. On the track, when you can use the gearbox to keep the motor in the powerband all the time without the cops giving chase it's perfect. On the street, you can never hit that 8,000-9,000 RPM range in any gear but first, and there's no low end on those motors. So where the Boxster has pickup from - and is fun to drive at - pretty much any rpm range from 2,500 rpm up, those Hondas/Acuras are 2nd gear cars only on the street
