Red Clip

Some people spray paint them black so they are hard to see when installed. I'm thinking that if anyone knows what the red clip does they will be more apt to see red than black. Hence, I left mine red!

Just snapped mine in place today.

I could not leave my car with the top down without it.

OK, I have a question. I have one also and have yet to use it. With it in place, the interior ultra-sound motion detector is enabled with the top down. The clip also disables the top from raising.

My question is; If the alarm is set and someone knows what the red clip is and they reach over and remove it, will the alarm go off? I know the detectors are under the latch assembly pointing down.

The answer is no, the alarm will not go off, unless the person accidenntally moves within the area of the sensors. The red clip isn't intended for the alarm, it's design purpose is to disable the top from operating when you use the speedster hump and tonneau cover options.

The alarm system was never intended to operate with the top open, it used the same micro-switch in the windshield header to determine that the top was closed. The red clip only tricks it into thinking the top is closed, nothing more.

The infrared motion sensors are not that sensitive, and even with the red clip in place, it's possible to slowly move your arm inside and remove something, plus, it's coverage area isn't complete, there are several blind spots. So you really should never leave any valuables inside.

LB's right on... lots of unarmed dead spots.

Reaching into your center cubby holes or your dash to snag your GPS or radar detector will trigger the alarm.

However, anything in the door pockets or rear storage compartment (above the engine) is unprotected. Same goes with your center windscreen or the rollbar inserts. All are at greater risk for theft when the top is left down and the clip is in use.

Center console is wired to the system, so if it's opened the alarm will sound regardless of red clip use.

Raising your windows with our without the red clip's use is a good idea for top down parking if you must do it.

The red clip, BTW, was designed for owners of factory humps. The idea was to disable the top switch so one could not accidently to raise the top when the humps were installed. Factory humps came with the red clip and extras were sold through the parts department because they're easily misplaced.

As ineffective as it might be, I would consider it to be better than no red clip if you do decide to park with the top down.
