Elf Oil

Thought you guys would find this interesting...

Brought the Boxster in for an oil change on Saturday to the independant mechanic that works on my Mercedes and he informed me that they use Elf 5W-40 rather than Mobil One :

http://www.roadrunner-region-pca.org/Porsche_engine_oil_article.pdf

Charged my $100 for the oil change. I was a little worried about not using Mobil One until I got home and did some searching around on the internet.

I wasn't aware that there are other "Porsche Approved" oils other than Mobil One.

Nick

I believe Castrol makes a 0w40 that is Porsche approved. ( i don't have an updated oil list in front of me however). I think the approved list is like 4-5 pages long with most being european oils.

Thanks for the link. It goes to show again there is good information available from all the regional sites. Every region seems to have something to offer that other regions don't have. So many regions, so little time

elf/total is great stuff, I have it in the P-Car, my Audi, and in the GTi, that see's A LOT of AutoX.

M1 on the other hand, I have nothing good to say about it anymore. While it was the shiz several years back, it is only "average" now.

I hear good stuff about Royal Purple. A well know Porsche indy shop here in the Chicago area only uses RP oil and trans/gear lube for the air cooled Porsche engines. They do lots of race cars for the PCA too. A few guys here use it. CJ in Calli does.

Sputter, would you believe that the list of approved oils now exceeds 10 pages!

$100 is purty good.

11 quarts of oil at $6 and a $20 oil filter(retail) = $86

I have a local shop I know well do it but I provide the oil and filter.
They charge me $20...used to be $10 but the shop chaged owners.
Still better than going to dealer and paying too much for oil and filters.

If you say so then I believe it man.
Personally, only one oil concerns me, it's that pretty sticker I see every time I open the rear trunk. lol

To my knowledge both Royal Purple and Red Line are class V synthetics. Not too many of those bad boys left.

Refers to the base oil used to make the motor oil.

Class 5 have base oils made of Poly-ol-esters. These are used in jet engine lube etc.

Class 4 are base oils made of Poly-ol-alephins. Also very good but one step below.

Class 3 are made of hydrocracked petroleum oils. Called synthetic by some, but not in Europe.

I don't vouch for my spelling the above chemicals correctly.

I used to run Royal Purple in all my other 911s, up until I bought a '73. The stuff leaks like mad out of early gaskets. That said, I just read an article about "Total" the other day and will probably use that for the next Box S change. BTW, the indy shop (I assume) in Chicago is who does all my work and built my 911 track cars.

I haven't heard anyone talk about AMSOIL. On their website it shows it passed the Volkswagen 505.01 test and has an API SM rating. I personally have been using it for 15 years in everything from my quad, Harley, SUV and Boxster. Anyone have any opinions about AMSOIL?

Last I checked it's not approved.
Oil, much like politics and religion can be a heated topic. You can take a peek at the Bitog site.

From everything that I have read, AMSOIL makes a quality Grade 4 syn oil.

I would use it without hesitation.
