Opened up engine compartment 1st time
Have owned my '03 S almost 4 years and have never seen the engine until today. I decided to take a look. What a PITA. You would think that the brilliant German engineers would devise a simpler method of accessing the engine. Not a fan of cleaning engines ( it was a little dusty) so I changed the air filter and closed it back up. I wonder how many Boxster owners on the forum have never seen their engine.

 You should have taken some pictures to justify all of that hard work!
How did your belts and such look? Was it extremely dirty? I have never looked at mine either, but now you make me slightly less enthusiastic about trying to access it.  I have enough projects that can easily be classifieds as royal PITAs already!

3500...... That is VERY true and VERY strange......I was ironically going to pop the top this weekend if weather permits (and it appears that it shall) --- and see what magic lies inside!!!

Well, I have had the car less than 2 years and have only driven it for about 14 of those months (winter storage). But, I've done over 17,000 miles, that's over 1,200 per month...one day here one day there...when it's nice out. So, I drive, and clean it. I don't have time to search & see the engine!
I've seen the underside of the engine, does that count for anything?

+1 for the never seen the engine. Owned it for 18k+ miles in about 1.5 years. Thought about looking at it, but then decided against bothering. Not sure what I would gain from the "experience". I will say though, I've spent 20 min trying to find out how to refill the wife's Mini with washer fluid. THAT was an experience. Who would think to look for the hood release on the passenger side? lol.

I've seen mine. Not because of curiosity, but necessity. Over the years I've changed the air filter, MAF sensor, and air/oil separator.
Unless you have some work to do in the engine compartment the experience is overrated, in my opinion.

I opened mine up a month after owning it to install a cool air intake. Very hard to reach around inside. After I was done, my back hurt from being hunched over for so long. I also detailed it before closing it up. It's been over a year now and I haven't needed to see it again.

I thought the access was rather clever, given the need to store a folding top somewhere on a mid-engine car. I opened mine 3 times in one year.. once for fun... once to replace the aircleaner and once to top off the P/S fluid. Since you so rarely need to access the top of the motor, I kinda liked it.

To be honest you can't really see much of the engine from above,just the intake manifolds and tubing from above on the 986,especially the 00'+ with the dual shaft design between the intakes.
You can see more when changing the serpentine belt of spark plugs.

I got the car in April, and haven't seen it yet. I've got a hardtop on for the winter, but I plan on doing the sparkplugs and air filter for my 30k service myself at the end of the winter, and will see it then in about 6-8 months.

I bought my used 2000 Boxster from a dealer without a prior inspection but as part of the deal they gave me 30 day period to return the car. As soon as I got it I took it to a place to get inspected. It was the first time I saw how to get into the engine, pretty cool.

Take it out for a short drive without the engine cover on. The sound is intoxicating.  (So are the fumes).

Ed, if you don't mind me asking.....What brand of intake and how much did that intake mod cost? How difficult was the installation? It looks great. (even though it will only been seen by the repair shop.... LOL)
