I wasn't going to say this until after you found your key...that it is probably in the bottom of her purse/bag somewhere (I had a similar misfortune)

The primary purpose of the "Red Clip" is to deactivate the top control mechanism when the car has "Speedster Humps" installed. It prevents major damage to the top, its machanism and the clamshell.
