I think the clue I'm looking for...

is does anybody recognize the symbol on the cap? It looks like one of those intrnational symbols that is supposed to be universally recognized but instead is quite cryptic. If I was guessing I would think it might be the pcover to some power receptacle.

I believe it's 'female' cap cover for a DC or AC power input. They usually cover a 12v plug-in for powering items like monitor, laptop, scanner, charging kit, etc... It's looks quite large so I'm guessing it just a plug cover.

I attached a an example of a female 12v DC/AC plug for a charger I have. The symbol is the same. Did you just have it serviced? It might be a cover for one of the service scanning tools. I have a scanning tool that has a power plug cover that large for scanning DHL shipping boxes in my warehouse.

yeah, and the round circle/hole looks like it belong on the cable so it doesn't get lost, although its too late for that now haha
