ummm....guys?
something weird happened...
i got some new numbers and letters cut for upcoming autocross, and i just wanted tos ee what they will look like on the car. put the numbers and letters on the passinger side, looks nice, then i decide to put the other ones on the drivers side and since the other car wasnt parked in our 2car garage i get to see better what it will look like from a bit far away...and to my suprise they will not stick to the door...then i took the numbers off the other door, same thing. i took the smaller letters and they stuck good on the botttttttom of the door, and they stick on the top right wher the window comes out, but nothing in the middle.
what is going on here?
btw, they stick on the both trunks, and fenders, but not on the drivers side door.
any help?

did you ever have any body work performed on the driver side door? Perhaps there is some body filler (like bondo) in it.

Funny you say this. I could swear that our doors are fiberglass of something. When you tap on them they dont sound like sheet metal to me.. Could just be me and my imagination?

That's an interesting way to check for body work. I'll have to remember that..

Don't have a clue of what the doors are made of - but sounds like that old fashioned way to test if your car has had body work done. Run the magnet along the side, and if it doesn't stick - then Bondo's the culprit.

Yeah, your magnets SHOULD be sticking just fine. I've never had a problem.

No issues with magnets sticking here. The doors are made of steel, not aluminum or fiberglass. Sounds like there may be some filler in one of your doors from previous bodywork. I wouln't worry about it.

now that's weird because those are made of Alluminum and not steel like the doors and fender panels. Or maybe I'm confused..

Same thing happened to me in my old 914. I went out for my first run as car number "32", and came back as number "3". One of the cone-chasers picked up the missing "2" on one of the corners, and returned it to me.
Bondo.

If i ever have to use magnetic numbers, im sure ill have that issue cause while the bodyshop guy pulled out as much door dings as he could.. he had to use alittle bondo here and there, I think you should make smaller numbers.
Did you ever do a PPI? if so did body work ever appear?
Try lightly tapping the area in question with a head of a screw driver and see if you hear a difference as you tap along the surface... if the noise echo becames more deep, then could be a spot of bondo in there.

That is indeed peculiar, I am quite sure my numbers will stick any where on the door, generally I place them right under the mirror. My numbers stick to the (rear) trunk lid, I keep the numbers on the underside of the trunk lid between events.
