My experiences are on the 17" Boxster tires, and I really liked 225/45/17 front vs the stock 205/50/17. Both for looks and handling.
In 18"s, I don't have any experience running a 235mm wide front tire on te 986, but if it fits (and I am sure it does, 25.4" diameter on that size, plenty of room) I think I know some folks running that size on stock suspension) I bet it would both look better and provide a little better front grip.
