Whenever you are rebuilding engines, you face having to either deck the heads, the engine case, or even both in order to get clean, parallel sealing surfaces. Decking the block brings the pistons higher in the bores, decking the heads shrinks the combustion chambers; so to compensate, you run thicker head gaskets to get back to the compression ratios that the DME is expecting for the ignition timing curves and knock controls to function correctly.
