It looks like the bottom edge of the top is coming loose from where it is secured around the bottom frame under the clam shell. That's why you can see the seam and the dirt that has accumulated on the bottom edge of the top that used to be under the clamshell. As an owner of another 2003 S I'll be curious to find out what it is too. Good Luck and please let us know!
