Ghost I have no Problem with you, I have not pulverized every seller on every car I have bought and I have broke even tons of times on resale but luckily I have not lost any money to date. I have thought many times I was getting a killer deal and run into every surprise known but I have been fortunate and still been able to break even or make some change. For instance the s4 I am getting rid of sat for 5 years and did not run when I picked it up. I figured I could part the car and still make money. I was lucky that one if the ecus was shot and I had one at the shop and after a little work I am now going to do quite well. I am not the best seller, I will drop on price rather quickly but I try and inform the purchaser of everything I know and most cars I have owned I have gone through with a fine tooth comb. I used to be a performance VW and Audi shop owner and was a mechanic for 6 years 3 of which I worked at a Porsche dealer in Aachen. This has saved me multiple times from bad purchases and I am willing to walk any time.

You are right on how people determine loss. Financially I calculate the time driving the car as a gain and my time working on cars is a stress relief for me so my time is not considered.
