DIY Dashboard Assembly Instructions

I recently had to disassemble and reassemble my dashboard. I documented the reassembly procedure.

Here are some useful tools for the job:

-The magnetic multi-bit screwdriver
-The driver extension, for the deeper recess in the steering wheel and useful for reaching the more deeply set screws under the dashboard
-The multi-bit rachet, which really helps with installation of the screws at the top of the dashboard and along the sides near the doors.
-The articulating magnet. Great for finding dropped screws and TORX bits.

It's pretty easy. I just did mine because I had to replace a bulb. This is from the service manual:

1. Disconnect battery (so you don't electricute yourself)
2. Pop out emergency light button using two thin flat heads on either side (helps to push button on first so it comes out a little)
3. Pop out speaker cover (next to ignition)
4. Remove the exposed torx screws (one on each hole you exposed)
5. Pull assembly up until it comes out
6. Remove 4 electrical connections attached to back.

The rest is pretty easy. I think there are only two more screws to remove after you separate it from the car. There are also some clips which are easy to remove too. The two control knobs will come out if you pull. Make sure to remember where the needles are in case you move them. Assembly is reverse.

That's the instrument panel, it's just a small part of removing the dashboard.

Simon ~
First, some are leather and some are imitation leather. Be sure about what you have.

Your old one is likely worth around $400-500, so be careful with it and be sure to market it.

The Bentley 986 service manual will help a lot. Well worth owning.

Take a lot of photos when disassembling. You may need 'em. ESPECIALLY the wiring harnesses and arrangements of wiring around the steering column. Gets tricky to reinstall correctly.

Allow time....no hurrying allowed!!!!!!

There are a few good photos around this forum. Keep looking.

WOW! I reviewed Meir's procedure and it's fantastic. I did the same job in Dec-Jan this year and I would have paid for that procedure (but he did it in August).
My only problems was an internally damaged 4-way flasher switch (from extracting it I guess). Scared the hell out of me thinking that I'd have to pull it all apart again.....found one from a wreak and saved some $. Ironic that it is one of the least used parts on a car and it's the one that fails.
Between Meir's posting and a Bentley manual you can't go wrong.

LOL!
I toke the hazard switch 3 times already in the past year and half.
Every time I forget how to do it.
Next time I'm going to use my own DIY
