'98 project car

So, I've been searching for a spare engine and trans for the SPB, just in case. Searching for salvaged vehicles as that is cheaper than buying separately. Found a '98 with 54k on copart, which I bought, took a quick 2-day roadtrip to Philly to pick it up. This morning was the first that I got a chance to go over the car (20 min), before heading to work. Turns out the car was a concours car, and other than the wreck damage on the front right is in pristine condition. No scratches, great top, paint in top condition. I'm guessing that when I pull the cover that you will be able to eat off the engine.

From what I can tell, everything is in working order, but I won't start till I loop the passenger radiator lines so I don't blow coolant everywhere. If everything checks out, I will rebuild and use for a daily driver. My wife is already trying to claim it as her car!

A pic to get this thread started.

Nice find, so much for finding a donor car lol

Yep, if I restore, will have to keep looking.

Car started on first try, slight lifter tick, but the car likely has not run in a month or so. Other than the damage, everything appears to be working well and is in great shape.

Lemming 10-04-2017 03:28 PM

Finally got time to really go over the car, will need to do a bit of pulling on the front right, but not much. Front right strut is bent, but I will be putting coilovers on it if I keep it. Heck of a car, need to find the original owner as he/she did a great job on it. Below is a pic of the car after just spraying with a hose, and it was filthy coming from the salvage yard. Wish I knew how to wax a car this well.

Best friend came over to see the car tonight, he is a car insurance appraiser, was blown away by the the 986, easy fix!. Got a shot of my 986 next to his 981S (same color combo). Will have to get a shot of my SPB (black/white), daily driver (981 red) and the new white 986.

And yes, there are three boxsters parked in my garage tonight.

I have stayed hounding on Copart myself but every time I like one it goes higher than I expect. :(

Lemming 10-07-2017 06:00 AM

SPB racers are certainly buying up cars for spare engines and transmissions. I expect to see a "flood" of 986s on copart after Harvey and Irma.

I'm right in Houston actually and there is loads of them. Some with waterline to the roof line though lol.

Decided to change the oil yesterday, light tan in color and no metal!

.

If the strut was bent then your carrier is probably bent also. You cant tell by looking at it. I sell carriers for $50+shipping and most people carry two spares with them to the track.

Thanks, still not sure what I am going to do with the car. I feel that it is in too good of condition to part, but but but but.... Originally I was just after the engine and trans, really just a parts car for my SPB. Time will tell and with work and travel, not much will be done between now and late Nov. The good thing is that my step son will be here for thanksgiving, he's rebuilds crashed cars for a living and will be able to give me great advice on the car.

Lemming 10-14-2017 08:19 AM

This was a day or two after getting it home, prior to being cleaned. This was the first time I had started it, had a bit of lifter tick from not running in a month or so, purrs like a kitten now. Looped the radiator lines as a bandage.

It is starting to appear that this project will be moving forward in the near future. With my daughter starting college next year and my racing budget, I will be selling the 981 and building the '98 986 into my daily driver.

Will start ordering repair parts over the holidays and have found someone with a rebuilders license who will do the paper work for the rebuilt title ($300). I plan to do all of the work, other than paint.

Will update as the project progresses.

Lemming 12-17-2017 01:43 PM

It's a go, majority of repair and body parts are on order!

Trying to decide what to do about the suspension. I will not be happy with stock, and one strut is bent from the accident. Will likely upgrade and would like coilovers for height adjustments. I'm familiar with PSS9s from my SPB, but need to do some research before deciding.

Christmas presents arrived on Friday!

Starting point for the project.

A good friend helped me with the car yesterday. Pulled out the BFH and went to work on the tub, then started hanging body work. Still lots of work to do, but it's going to be easier than I thought.

Great progress.
If your painter is really good, you won’t be able to tell it was in a collision.
My Body guy is an artist.
Another good painter and body man couldn’t find where my DD Forester was hit and repaired.
The only tell is the branded ownership.

aviorperformance 12-28-2017 08:55 AM

Probably best to paint the pieces off the car so they can get in all the areas better.

That's the plan, at this point we are just trying to get everything to line up properly.

You have a good start. What colors are you going to use on the other panels:

Too funny, I posted that image on my facebook page the other day after taking that shot!

Lemming 01-02-2018 04:21 AM

Moved the AC/Heater controller to the lower slot and ordered a double din CarPlay receiver. Don't worry, I'm getting the fill piece as well.

Funny, I fixed up an almost identically damaged car myself about 2 years ago. Needed a bumper, fender, headlight, the rad/fan/condenser assembly, and a few small plastic pieces. Thankfully I didn't have to touch the suspension. I ended up painting the bumper and fender off the car. Luckily they matched perfectly and there was no need to blend the adjacent panels. Let me know if you have any questions. Best of luck!

Lemming 01-03-2018 04:25 AM

Yes, very similar. I'm planning on sending just the fender and cover to the painter, however, white is very tricky to match. Time will tell if blending will be necessary.

Lemming 01-08-2018 04:46 AM

3 Attachment(s)
Body parts were dropped of with the painter on Friday, hope to have back in 7-10 days. In the meanwhile, added a Pioneer receiver, rear view camera, and short shifter. Everything is working, just need to button everything back up.

Feeling a bit frustrated. Went down to work on the car, wanted to get the interior back in shape as the paint shop will be done on Wed; trying to move this car along. The new stereo and back-up camera are working well. Went to role the windows up and nothing happened. Thought maybe I had blown a fuse, but it was fine. Tried the window relearn since battery has been disconnected on-and-off while I worked on the car, windows still in lowest position. Pulled center console back off to look for disconnected wires, but the window relay looms looked normal. Pulled climate control unit, which I had moved to the lower position and did find one 4-pin connector just hanging. At first I thought that I had solved my problem, but could not find the other connector. After searching the wiring diagrams, looks like it is the plug for the phone (see below).

So, can anyone think of why the windows won't move? Hard to believe that both switches or motors went at the same time.

Lemming 01-16-2018 01:48 PM

Snow day here is B'ham so I had time to work on the car.

Turns out that it was a fuse afterall, C3 (control unit for central locking system/alarm systems).

Lemming 01-23-2018 03:03 PM

Panels are back from paint, will clearly have to get some blending done to make it work. Drove it a few miles today to the gas station and back, very happy with the way it runs. Pulled a vacuum on the AC system and then charged, currently blowing cold air, hope it stays that way.

Car is aligned and a joy to drive. Will drop it off at a friends shop to get the rebuilt title next week.

Still working on getting everything lined up better, but that can be completed after it is titled. Need to get my 981 sold now.

Make sure the front hood line gets corrected, otherwise you will get water ingress into the frunk on the left side.

Lemming 02-02-2018 01:27 PM

Got that one taken care of on Wed, will get pics.

vivalegreg 02-04-2018 07:13 PM

Currently resurrecting one 99 myself, i was gonna say looks familiar, ha.

Any reason why you are looping the cooling system hoses? Also, what short shifter did you go with?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Lemming 02-05-2018 10:40 AM

Radiator hose was looped until I could replace the radiator, original was destroyed in crash.

Cheap ebay short shifter, $50 shipped. Got the same one in my race car, no issues yet.

Ha with this car.

I entered a car show with a pristine Cayman and a beautiful Ferrari and a car just like this out of the tree can you guess who won.

Lemming 03-20-2019 12:43 PM

After what seems like an eternity, this car finally has it's rebuilt title and is on the road. Took a nice long drive today, the car is great.

I still plan to use the 55K engine as a spare for my SPB race car. Will starting looking for a good condition 3.2L to drop in. Might be a few months until I can make this happen.

gilberts 03-20-2019 11:41 PM
