Codes P1128 and P1130 popped up over the weekend after some spirited driving. Pulled the MAF and gave it a good cleaning, so far the codes have not come back. Fingers crossed.

Codes came back yesterday. Hooked up the durametric and found that the TRA's were trimming fuel (-.36) so the car was running rich at high RPMS. Pulled the MAF from the my SPB, installed and the car ran great. On the left is the SPB maf, and on the right is the DD maf. Notice the browning at the curvature. The DD car came with a K&N air filter, which I'm guessing had been over oiled at times, causing the buildup on the maf. Cleaned it again and it's back in the car, if the code comes back again (which I'm guessing it will), time for a new maf.

Pipercross offers sport air filters that work without oil. Seem also to be available in the US:

Going back to stock air filter. I've have a new MAF on the way was well.

Very nice. I have a very similar project car from copart. I got it for $1500, but with shipping and fees the cost was $2900. I got it up and running.
How much did you pay for your boxster? Also I noticed that you mentioned that there is some cover for cd player besides the double DN kit because I have an aftermarket player, but there are some holes around it. Here is my first video of my Porsche https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLnrIsGiTKw I decided to do bunch of DIY videos if you'll need any help with repairs, but seems like you're almost done:) |
I paid $2650, plus fees and a trip to Philly and back to get it.
Car is running great since putting a stock filter and new MAF in the car. I've got a G01 trans lined up from a '00 car that will be dropped in so I can save the G00 trans as a spare for my SPB car. Still looking for a good deal on a 3.2L engine, but starting to collect the parts I need for the engine swap. |
This car has worked well since my last post, has just over 60K original miles. I originally bought the car for the engine and trans as spares for my SPB. Well the time has come to do just that as I found a crashed 2001 S nearby and I bought it (97K miles). I'm currently stripping the S, my plan is to transplant the engine and trans and part out what I don't want.

Don't forget to grab and use the complete S coolant tubes from the front to the back. It's my opinion that the tubes are more important than the third radiator. The 996 doesn't come with a third radiator but it does have the larger tubes. Porsche started using the larger tubes for the base 2003+ tiptronic boxsters too. I've seen a few racers regret not converting over when they had a chance
Didn't see you at COTA this weekend? |

I really wanted to go to COTA this year, but was hoping that they would have an open track day on Thursday prior to the event. Guess the cost is prohibitive. I'll get there one of these days. Next PCA races for me are Road Atlanta and NOLA. |
If anyone is looking for parts from a 2001 S, let me know. Keeping engine, trans, head/tail lights, and body panels. Interior and other parts will be sold. If you need something let me know.

Question, I plan on using the 986 S 6 speed trans ('01) in my 986 base ('98). Which half shafts work with this configuration, the S or base shafts? Thanks.
Oops, just read this http://986forum.com/forums/performance-technical-chat/47294-6-speed-conversion.html So, has anyone done this and have the parts list? I have the intact S that I can pull parts from or am I just better off using the 5 speed that's already in my base car? |

So the project is finally back and making progress. The 3.2L engine is in, but I am still working on getting the air intake set up (waiting on a part that should arrive today). I ended up using an airbox from a 987 Cayman S, and 996 mechanical TB. In order to make the airbox fit, I had to do a bit of sheet metal work (think saw and hammer), but it's in an area you will never see unless you pull the engine.
New clutch and pressure plate are installed. All the parts for the 6-speed transmission install are on hand. Still trying to decide on the exhaust. I've got both the 986 and 986S exhaust, but am thinking of building a less restrictive setup as I did with my SPB. Picked up a set of bilsteins PSS9s for cheap from a racer moving to MCSs and also replaced all wheel bearings while I was in there. New LCAs as well. Hoping to have it off the lift by the end of this weekend, then will get a friend to flash the ECU to a 996. Can't wait to start driving it again. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1650379613.jpg |
Getting the car flashed was a PITA, all those that said they could do it, couldn't. I finally took the ECU with me to ECR last month and John G did it in a flash (so to speak). Car is running and it is strong. Headed to the dyno on Wed, will post results when I get them.

Two dynos are shown below.
Blue line was with 2.5 headers and midpipes (with cats) and 3.2L muffler. Red line was with 3.2 catless headers, catless midpipe, and 3.2 muffler. Max HP increase was just less than 10 HP and 12 lb ft of TQ, but usable power throughout the range is much better, at times 20 lb ft of torque as well as HP. Still a bit fat on the air/fuel. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1671133460.jpg |
Nicely done!
I'm curious, do you have pics of the specific headers you tested? I'm curious to know if there's much of a difference in piping diameter or if the only real difference is the lack of cats. Also, did you make any intake adjustments between the test? Maybe I missed it, but what intake setup did you use? Also, for your AFRs, it looks like you're running around 11ish? That's standard programming for our ECU to run at WOT (or at least that's what my 996 tune does). It will be quite tricky to tune that out without altering the maps. Headers are from Electrodyne, they had a black Friday sale that came in handy (35% off), midpipe catless headers are from Circuit Werks (non resonator version).
For the intake I have a 987 Cayman S airbox, custom intake piping and a 996 mechanical throttle body. Nothing on the intake side was changed between dynos. Most of the A/F is 11.75-11.5, the only time it's near 11 is at 6K rpms. In contrast, my SPB (2.5L stock intake system and exhaust headers) runs from 11-10.5 throughout the RMP range. |
