Opinions on brake caliper and wheel color
I'm trying to add some dimension to my arctics silver boxster and naturally, I think coloring the brake calipers and rims will help do just that. So far I've added an offset stripe and porsche badge to the back, but now I'm concentrating in the side view if he car.
I have a boxster base with a carrera front end and carrera rims. For brake caliper colors, I really like red, though it is 'reserved' for the S. But I'm thinking, since the car is already pretty unique with its front end, offset stripe, and iPad mini in-dash installation, I might as well give it a unique caliper color too. Currently, I'm bouncing between a line green color like in the photo below or a Mexico blue color instead. The rims will almost certainly be changed to matte or glossy black and I'll add a side stripe in the color that matches the caliper. Any suggestions or photos of your boxster are appreciated :) Green calipers http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/27/eqepege7.jpg My car http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/27/3yvu8asy.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/27/ra9u2eta.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/27/amytyzy3.jpg |
I like the Mexico blue idea. Where can you source such paint? Specifically Mexico Blue.

This:
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1385499071.jpg Very easy. You retrofit your headlights with GT style xenon projectors, add a set of c-lock style center caps (mexico blue), paint your wheels semi matte black (satin), calipers in speed yellow, add cool air valves & caps, clean your tire with a foam (no shines), and VOILA! You get this: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/011380018977.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/071380019069.jpg ^ I tell people at the circuit it's the new 2012 CGT model from the Porsche Asia-Pacific (sub-branch) |
If I didn't have the carrera headlights I would definitely be considering that look.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/27/y6ege9eh.jpg The taillights and back end are another story. I'd love a way to make the car beefier on the edge and give it a lower profile look like you have with the side skirts. Yellow calipers on silver don't seem as flattering as they do on red though.. |
I just saw this thread.
http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/41718-painting-calipers-other-than-red-yellow.html I really like the blue look, especially if I can accent it. The 'acid green' on the 911 is perfect, I just don't know if it'll give the same effect on a boxster |
Some inspiration for your headlights ;)
http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-S...-SQh2sVD-L.jpg http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-G...-GgQs7DQ-L.jpg or... CF wrap with a retrofitted clear lens bi-xenon projector? http://blackflamecustoms.com/wp-cont...tors%20(2).jpg RE wheels, you need 23mm spacers in the rear and 10mm in the front. Your wheels are the ultra light ones so you should be just fine. My box is the RoW german model so that's why it looks a bit low :/ I think you can achieve the same with the RoWM30 spring kit (cheap-cheap, and it adds +32RWHP) |
Headlight bi-xenon mod adds up +12rwhp. Almost forget to mention sorry

Opinions on brake caliper and wheel color
I'm WAYYY to scared that I'd mess something up with my headlights if I start messing with them. No amount of added horsepower will offset the risk ;)
I'll probably photoshop some caliper colors tonight and see what I get.. This is the side stripe I've been eyeing... I like how it extends from the front bumper. I'd either get one that looks like that, or one that extend front the front edge of the door to the back bumper... I don't really like the ones that go from rim to rim, just my opinion. Of course, it would say 986 rather than 987 S... And it'll match the color of the calipers somehow http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/27/gabe5uvu.jpg |
I have blue calipers (done myself) with seal grey car. Just search thread with "here ya go, blue calipers" and you will see a few pics of my car.
In differing daylight, the calipers do look Monterey blue at certain times. |
Ok. This is why no one can ever find my thread. Please search "BLUE caliper" and you will see it. I guess it doesn't recognize the caps on.

Green is a bold move...love it :D
I need bumper plugs. http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps151960fe.jpg http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/a...8639FB9327.jpg http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/a...8D0800C0F6.jpg And, of course, these are going to tie in nicely :D Almost done! http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps798e473a.jpg |
There you go, some choices! I've also installed a ROW M30 spring kit, an Alpine radio, and painted your headlights. The ROW springs takes a while to settle, it will look a bit lower when driven a few miles ;)

Njoy! |
and looking at Particle's ride above, I'd definitely go for the green'ers. Looks cool
My choice: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1385541688.jpg |
If you make the calipers green you are going to go with a green side stripe? I would not do that personally. I would either go with a side stripe that matches your racing stripe or one that matches the color of the wheels (black) when you decide to paint them. You might even consider painting the wheels in a charcoal color to match the stripe you already have so it all ties together.

Nine8Six and particle wave, your expert brake caliper simulation and reference photo has brought me to a final decision lol. I'm going with a green themed brake caliper and trim accent job.
I've decided to do the brake calipers in the new acid green porsche color for their hybrid vehicles. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/28/9eny7aqe.jpg The trick will now be getting porsche to give me a bottle of it for my brakes (never gonna happen). I might go to a local auto paint shop and see if they can mix yellow and green caliper paint to give me that look. In addition to the calipers, I'm going to add the side stripes like in the 987 photo I posted earlier. I'll probably put that stripe in black to match the painted rims or a ghost silver to match the stripe, but I'm going to try to have 986 written in acid green. I'm going to have the side view mirrors two toned such that the now silver part will be gloss black and the underside that is now black will be acid green vinyl wrap... Like this http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/28/hu7evuvy.jpg Finally, I'm considering having an acid green boxster vinyl put into the spoiler for when it goes up.. Maybe overdoing it with that. I'm also looking for possible wheel caps in an acid green theme or possibly lining the inside of the tire, where it meets the rim, with an acid green stripe to seperate the black tire from the black rims... Opinions? |

Absolutely horrible LOLLLL
(sorry, I get to say stuff like this when I start getting extremely JEALOUS. It's uncontrollable :( ) |
ok ok ok, I just got over my bad-teenager behavior and have to admit this is pretty sexy man. Well bloody done
Post more pictures, different angles |

Haha... Ummm, that's a photoshop of what I'm going to do. Still playing with it a bit. I'm trying not to give it a hulk green so I keep tasking the color to subdue it a little before I go to an auto paint shop and ask them mix me the color.
I think the black side stripe with green '986' lettering will be the money maker |

Mate you got some serious skills... I was convinced you did those overnight :/ |

It's the only thing that saves me from repainting everything I do. If I'm not absolutely convinced before I start, I usually change my mind half way through. I'm picking up some black Plastidip and glossifier today and calling body shops to see who can do a custom order of brake caliper paint. Keep you posted |

I've finally got everything I need to make this plan come through. I've decided to kickstart the process by redoing the center console and various trim pieces with vinyl wrap.
This isn't really on topic with the thread title of brake calipers, but I wanted everyone's honest opinion on what they think, mainly about the acid green accent. I'm considering adding this accent in various places; like door handles, horizontal trim that divides the upper and lower dash, brake calipers, trim of pedals, etc. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/4a6ymesy.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/ny7ume4y.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/a3a4yse9.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/y5y8ena7.jpg |
It's not my choice of color, but, I still like it, assuming you are going with those colors on your calipers and other accents. I would not over do it though. And since it is vinyl, if you get tired of it, you can always go back.
|
I honestly think it's too much.
Maybe something more subtle like a pinstripe down the ebrake handle or just the stitching on the shift boot and on a custom leather wrap steering wheel. It's funny because I've been experimenting with the green on interior bits for the last week also...decided to go with white accents, though. Get some neon green masking tape and experiment ;) That's what I do. |
what is that other vinyl's color called, I like it.
|
Yes I believe I vomited a little bit when I saw that center console with green :barf:
You should finally do your wheels this weekend so I can see how it looks, and decide if I want to taint my dr.seuss inspired porsche rims with plastidip as well |
One coat... Good enough

Finished painting yet?

Just the base coat. I still have to clear coat the whole thing

Is that paint or Plasti-dip?

Niceeeeee work, good taste and all!
Now you just need to order one set of those R14 in black and you are rolling with class again |
No, it looks great! Did you use the glossifier or something else? I Plasti-Dipped my lugs too.

Thanks for the compliments everyone!
I used the plasti dip glossifier. Btw, did your wheels still feel tacky even after the completely dried? Lol I was finally able to take a picture with natural sunlight on the wheels :) http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/23/utujuby8.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/23/y4erevur.jpg |

The black one is black brushed metal vinyl. I bought it from eBay ; it's Avery supreme. I have to say, it forms just like 3m 1080 and is really good quality |
Tacky? No, they feel more like they are rubber, which makes perfect sense. The only thing I don't like is that they are harder to clean now, not just a simple wipe down.
