Why not get a 911 knob from your dealer. They have a bunch lying around as the 911 guys usually upgrade. Mine was free... worth a try..

That's a very good question.. I believe summer tires do not do very well below freezing as they use a harder compound then winter tires. They may be too hard to deliver good traction.

So I want to do some preventative maintenance on my car, so I plan on ordering a tune up kit from pap-parts which includes spark plugs, air, cabin and oil filter and a fuel filter (don't need that)...

Sounds like the camber of the rear tires is way off, and thus they hit the road at an angle which wears the inside quicker. I would have the alignment redone, as that kinda wear is dangerous.
