Why not get a 911 knob from your dealer. They have a bunch lying around as the 911 guys usually upgrade. Mine was free... worth a try..

That's a very good question.. I believe summer tires do not do very well below freezing as they use a harder compound then winter tires. They may be too hard to deliver good traction.

Sounds like the camber of the rear tires is way off, and thus they hit the road at an angle which wears the inside quicker. I would have the alignment redone, as that kinda wear is dangerous.
