I think the very first Porsche (a 356) was in fact mid-engined and aluminum-bodied. But they had to move the motor to the back to accommodate four seats, as far as I know.

As far as I know the 97's can't take 18" wheels (this issue was fixed in the 98's, I think).
But... BBS LM's do look AWESOME on a Boxster (perhaps you can get it in 17" rim diameter?)
