I had a similar noise. Engine chain-like noise emanated from the water pump (Jake found it). Easy enough to remove belt and check shaft play.

try changing to a heavier wt oil

For what it's worth, I recently had my oil changed from 5w 30 to 10w 40 (by Jake) and it resolved by smoke issues.
