Engine stand

A question for those who have rebuilt an M96: what did you use for an engine stand?
I am all for buying tools--especially special tools--when they facilitate a repair and have future use. But an $800 adapter seems a bit excessive to allow the engine to flip on the stand for piston and intermediate shaft insertion.
Did you build your own? Borrow?
I certainly have friends who could make one, but that's a serious imposition.
