Engine stand
A question for those who have rebuilt an M96: what did you use for an engine stand?
I am all for buying tools--especially special tools--when they facilitate a repair and have future use. But an $800 adapter seems a bit excessive to allow the engine to flip on the stand for piston and intermediate shaft insertion. Did you build your own? Borrow? I certainly have friends who could make one, but that's a serious imposition. |
While the Porsche mounting adaptor is very nice, it is not a requirement, any adjustable engine stand can work.

I did use one for disassembly, but it was ...interesting... getting the IMS out. I was also worried about breaking a boss. |
I paid $50 for a used (Big Red?). Have had 2 engines on it and pulled the IMS on the second engine, that is still on the stand. There is a picture at the beginning of this thread.

Thanks for this thread as I just bought an engine stand and was worried about using just four crankcase threaded holes to support all the weight of the engine.
But apparently that's sufficient. Any problems or issues? |
