NewArt dumb newbie questions

Okay, as you may have noticed, I’ve upped the ante with my new-to-me 2010 Boxster S with a PDK. I have a track event in a week and I’m scrambling toe get this car ready.
Question one: the tire spec for this car is 265/40/18 for the rears. My track tires are 265/35/18. I’d like to use these tires for this event, do we see any problems?
Question 2 concerns my Hawk HP plus brake pads: the fronts call for a different model than my 2004 pads but when I compared the two, I could only see that the new car had bigger weights attached to the pads but were otherwise identical. Anyone have experience with this?
So it’s my turn to ask the questions now.

987.2 Caymans and boxsters use the same pad shapes (with some overlap with 987.1 but I'm not sure of that).

From my 986 boxster S, I was able to move over to the Cayman my rear track pads but not my front (my understanding was they were a few mm too tall but I did not physically try). I was also able to transfer my front rotors but not back, but that doesn't apply for you since 987.2 S uses different rotors than base, thicker I think and maybe larger diameter? I can't confirm.

If your track front pads are the same shape as what's in your 987.2 front rotors I say go for it! The weights are for noise abatement and non of the track pads I run have them.

Tires, the boxster spec is 25" diameter f/r, 987.2 is bigger, but a friend runs his old boxster size tires on his Cayman and is fast but runs out of gear in a few high speed places where he doesn't when he runs his normal Cayman sizes. I bet you will be fine.

When those tires run out, with your S, you could run 275/40/18 in back and 245/40/18 front or even 285/35/18 back which I run and love :-)

You will miss your 986 but I think you will love your new 987.2!

Thanks Steve, I’ll take a closer look tomorrow concerning the height of the pads. As for the tires, if it doesn’t cause any problems, I’ll get to wear out my re71-r tires and then change to maybe Nittos for the next events. What are you running now?

The tires should be fine. It will change your gearing and pull harder out of corners.

Yes, I think this is standard on PDKs.

Was it a height issue? They (GLOC) said you could take a 987.2 front pad and run it on 986 S but not the other way around.

If you need to get your pad situation sorted quickly I can send you some 987.2 GLOC R10 front pads that I ran on my Cayman for fronts, you can have them for free, I had to drill the holes on the fronts to get the pins to fit and as a result they have some odd wear courtesy of a lip that is developing on the top of the pad. I would say there is more than 50% of life left in them. I should send them back and make them give me a refund, but they would probably just give me new pads which I don't need since I have moved on. This is the 2nd time I have had to drill the hole to get the pins to fit with them, last time was a set of boxster rears.

I also have a set of nearly new Ferodo DS-2500 for 987.2 that I would sell at 1/2 new cost, they have 300 street miles and 1 easy session at Road Atlanta. I was going to see if I could use them as a dual street/track pad (they are highly recommended for that) but after using a true heavy duty track pad (GLOC/CarboTech and then Ferodo DS 1.11) I didn't like the (albeit small) reduction in braking and modulation at the limit going into T10 a at Road Atlanta so I took them off after 1 session. I could get either of these shipped out ASAP and get them there in time for your weekend, if you haven't already got your pad situation sorted?

My first set of tires was Hankook RS-4 in 245/40/18 and 275/40/18 - 10mm wider f/r but also a little taller and I think that hurt my gearing a little pulling out of corners.

Now I am on 245/40/18 and 285/35/18 R-S4, and the slightly shorter sidewall on the 285 has helped my gearing and pull out of corners, but I am still not running out of gear in places like T13 Tower turn at Sebring where I wind out in 3rd. And I can really tell the extra difference in that extra 10mm per side back there, I can really press hard and the car really sticks back there. I am now battling a little understeer in front, so I wanted to try 255/35/18 in front, but oddly, according to several folks at Tire rack, the 255/35/18 R-S4 is actually not as wide with regard to tread width as the 245/40/18 so I am sticking with the 245 until I can lay eyes on a 255 tire in person to see for myself.

In the NT-01, I think 275/40/18 and 245/40/18 would be just right. That should fit on the OEM wheels if that's what you are running.

I think you will feel this, I sure did but with all your extra "S" power for your next set, I think going 275/40/18, the extra width and grip will offset the gearing loss.

At the track I’m running 8x18 et52 front and 10x18 et40 rears with 10mm spacers. The stock wheels are 8x18 et 57 and 9x18 et43.
