New member - 01' Boxster needing some FRUNK help

Hi guys,

New owner here. I purchased a 986 today from local Copart auction. I didn't see the car in person, only online before bidding.



My thoughts after receiving it.

-I can't see a waterline anywhere
-It has no interior smell AT ALL
-Seats etc look very good
-Found oil service sticker with 58k , shocked at the low miles

My dilemma...
I need to open the frunk. I already tried the fuse piece u pull out and connect jumper cable to, nothing happens.

Online I found a vid that said there was a cable wire on driver side by washer bottle? It's not there.

Found another video that says there's cable wire by passenger side headlight, I don't see it. It's a squeeze looking since wheel is still on. I can't remove liner because I'm going to assume the lug key is in the frunk!

Can someone confirm the location of the emergency cable release?

Once it's open I will get some power to it so we can access the engine bay. First step drain the oil and hope for no water!

what year - different systems for different years. if manual levers, trick that has worked for me is to get a small screwdriver in under the lever to move the lock out of the way so that the lever will lift. will try to find a link to the online instructions.

here’s a written description ...

use a small screwdriver and manually slide it to unlock by slipping the skinny blade down between the frunk and trunk levers and sliding it parallel to the bumpers.

It is a 2001 model. I've never wanted to open up a hood so bad.

And from the wheel well with headlight in...

Turn the wheel all the way to the left or get it off using an oversized socket hammered onto the security lug. It would help if you had an endoscope or at least a mirror.

Which year is it? As The Radium King wrote, different systems have different years.

Have you got a battery charger that can work with the cigar lighter? If yes, charge it up and open the frunk.

Check tow hook hole too as many owners relocate it there for easier access...

I have a 2001 and this is where I found mine. Had to turn the wheel and remove the plastic liner to reach in. Just give it a yank if you find it.

I actually found out why it won't open with power hookup. The under the seat immobilizer is toast. I'm guessing that's how this car got labeled "flooded" at auction. Just enough water came in thru the drain hole and wet the dam thing. I'm still happy with my purchase.

Looking got frunk cable:
You may have a tough time getting to it if it hasn't been relocated and you can't pull the inner wheel liner loose. Turn your wheels, and see if you can get the liner loose enough to see behind passenger side headlamp assembly.

BTW, If you need to get a wheel off without the lug bolt lock, find a close fit deep well socket and pound it on wheel lock. Hit it with an impact driver and it will come right off.

This only works on base models and not the S because the third radiator is in the way. There are holes on the bottom of the bumper cover. If you reach up toward the right side of the car you can grab the cable and yank.

Good luck with your flood Boxster! I picked up a flooded 01 S out of Miami just recently. Water only got high enough to kill the immobilizer. Sadly the ignition had already been changed once and the door lock had been drilled out, so getting a key from Porsche didn't do the trick. Ended up getting a good deal on ecu, immobilizer, ignition lock, door luck, and 2 keys from eBay. Checked all the fluids, charged the battery, and it fired right up!

Wow I didn't even think about looking on eBay for a set. There is A LOT of them on there! Thanks for the idea.
