Gearbox Question?

I bought a gearbox from a wrecker for my 1998 Boxster and I have just noticed a VW and Audi logo on the gearbox.

Please don't tell me it's the wrong one?

What's the gearbox serial / part number(s) stamped on the (I think) front L/H side?? They are the numbers to indicate if you have the correct gearbox or not.

Is CWA a term used by numerous car manufacturers or just Porsche?

CWA is Porsche designation.

That's really bizarre because when I took it to a Porsche Specialist he took one look at it and said no that's not a Porsche gearbox.

I'm gonna take it to a real Porsche center tomorrow and see if they recognize it. Mine has CWA written on two seperate parts of the gearbox but with different numbers.

There are 3 separate components to the transaxle. 1. the bell housing this Porsche part and has the CWA on top and adapts the gearbox to the engine block. 2. the gearbox, it is the AUDI central piece, housing the gear clusters. 3. is the differential, this is Porsche piece it has the CWA on the bottom just below the gear selector and output flanges passenger side. Differential houses Ring and pinion and spyder gears. It is what allows the outside axle to travel faster than the inside axle in a turn.

What would CWA1245 mean?

Attached is a link that has a picture by Woody that shows 2 transmissions, the left is a 97 base 5 speed and should look like yours.

That's a good question.... According to the Bently manual it is supposed to be a 5 digit code designating DD/MM/Y. My diff only has 4 digits CWA 0508, and is on a 98. Sunset Porsche said it was 50 from the last MY. I dunno.

Thanks for the link. It looks almost identical to mine accept for the one part which I've circled in the pic below in black. I dunno if that's because he's got something attached to his.

Looks like a good match except as you say for the lug you circled. In the pic I attached you can see a bulkhead/ stiffening rib running through that area.

Then again I found this gearbox out of a 99 and it has the same lug as mine.

EDIT: As long as Audi and VW don't use the same coding system as Porsche IE CWA12127 I should be ok
