Introduce Propane into Air Intake??

My son's 1988 944 Turbo failed smog so I was looking online to find the procedure for testing the O2 sensors and found this set of instructions suggesting the introduction of propane into the air intake with the engine running!

I had no idea that testing O2 sensors would involve explosive gases! Cool.

I would not use propane in an uncontrolled environment like that - a backfire could be deadly

Yeah, I was just joking about trying it out. Sounds like a good way to ruin an engine, set fire to a car, or burn down the whole damn house!

I was just amazed that someone wrote that up into an official looking procedure!

Scanner Danner has a video on troubleshooting catalytic converter code P0420, where he manually introduces a rich condition into the engine by adding propane to the intake and watches the O2 sensor voltages.
