I've had this happen twice and it also involved the car sputtering and backfiring out the intake. Any of that happening? What is going on with the way the car is running that is causing that flashing check engine light?

The first event was about 10 seconds, going downhill, no noticeable change in performance. The second event was about 10 minutes later and lasted about 5 seconds; I was going uphill and there was some sputtering.

That's the million dollar question, my friend. I've also had a metallic smell coming from the back end; not sure if it's related.
