I can't answer your last question with 100% certainty, but I would find it shocking is simply disconnecting the battery for a long period, say 20 minutes to an hour, would cause permanent damage. I would think the lack of power may cause some loss of stored data, such as fuel mix settings, but things like these would reset over time and several drive cycles.
