Which oil to use

Living in the desert should I be using a different weight oil for my 98 boxster with 115,000 miles?

Use a high quality, full synthetic, 5W40 or 5W50. Change yearly or every 5,000 miles. What are you using now?

What's up with the ruh-roh?

I'm using Mobil 1 0W-40, that's what the Porsche dealer recommended.

I'd recommend either:

Joe Gibbs DT40 5W40
or
Mobil 1 5W50

Without going into a long rant, the term "full synthetic" means different things to different people and world markets.

In seriously warm SoCal low desert, perhaps consider Redline 10W-40. In high desert with occasional frosty mornings Redline 5W-40 would be a decent choice. (Properties differ appreciably only at truly cold start-up.) Neither is cheap.

There are lots of good oils. I love "German Castrol" (a heavy 0W-30) for my GTI, but most would say the claimed HTHS viscosity of around 3.5 or 3.6 is a little low for the 986.

For the simple reason that Porsche AG and Mobil Inc have a commercial agreement....

If Castrol or AN Other oil company put in the lowest bid next time Porsche went to tender for the supply of lubricants, then the recommended oil would be Castrol or AN Other and Mobil would be soon forgotten.
It wasn't very long ago that Porsche AG had a commercial agreement with Shell ND to supply all their lubricants - just look for the Shell logo in the engine compartment of the air cooled cars.....

Use 10-40 or 10-50. No need for 5 or 0 in California. I use 10-40 year round here in Idaho.
