Wheel noise?

Just purchased my first Porsche! '02 Boxster. I'm noticing a high pitched whine /*0009 after I reach about 25 mph...seems to be speed dependent so I'm assuming it's coming from one of the wheels. Has anyone had a similar issue? I'm having a four wheel alignment this weekend and will quiz the mechanic on it.

Sounds like a wheel bearing.
Put the car on jack stand, and push each wheel from top and bottom, in and out.
If you have " play ", the bearing is bad.

My 02S had a rear bearing go at 40, 000 mi. The whine or roar gets worse with time and is speed dependent. You can usually hear a gritty sound when rotating the tire when on a lift.

just fixed the same issue in my 02S right rear wheel bearing gradually got so loud i couldnt hardly stand to drive it-there was no play in the wheel when jacked up and moved around-my mechanic replaced for 377.00 parts and labor-he said its very common for rear bearings to fail in 2000-2002S models especially the right rear he told me he has replaced alot of them-get it done and youll enjoy a much smoother queiter ride.

Had the same problem about a year ago on my '02 base. Whining noise coming from passenger side rear wheel area. Could not get a definitive diagnosis that it was indeed the wheel bearing.

I ended up having the rt. rear wheel bearing replaced hoping that would take care of the problem. Bearing replaced - noise gone.

Very interesting since it was also my right rear bearing that went bad on a 2002S. I went ahead and replaced all four bearings, thinking if one was bad the others were probably not too far behind.

+1 on the wheel bearing issue. I got it all handled myself except for pressing the new bearing in. $50 got me the bearing pressed and he hot washed all the parts, came back looking like brand new. Ironically enough it was also my R side bearing on a '02S.
