Air filter - how often do you change it?

Pelican part says every 10k... but how often do you change it?

I just changed mine after 20k+ and I felt like it gained 5hp on the butt dyno.

Every other year. So about 15,000 miles. Not even that dirty.

Per the Porsche schedule, this is a 40,000 mile part on the 987. Inspect at 20,000 miles, replace if necessary.

Trouble is that on the 986 there's a layer of foam glued on top of the paper filter so you can't really inspect the elements unless it's cut open. Mine was well overdue so I'll definitely change it more often from now on.

I tear that off. Makes the intake a little louder and I do not believe anything gets through.

I replace my engine air filter every 3K miles when I change the oil. Car is extensively tracked so clean air and clean oil is my top priority.

When I worked at Saleen we had a 1993 Ford dually P/U with a 460 ci engine.
In 1995 I was driving the dually pulling a new Saleen 351 SR to the Road & Track "fastest car made in America" competition in Stockton TX at the Firestone test track. The dually had lots of low rpm torque but around 3500 rpm it just started giving up & seemed to have a rev limiter set to 4500. Real pain towing up all the hills in AZ & seemed to get worse on the trip back to Long Beach CA. Dually had about 60K miles & fresh oil change when I left so I assumed it had been well maintained & I had never driven it before. When I got back I told the shop foreman how it drove & they finally inspected the air filter, it was the original & had never been touched before. New air filter added about 100 HP!

When the Road & Track magazine test came out I was in a picture with Phil Hill by the Saleen.

Every oil change which is twice per year. The element is always visibly dirty but never totally clogged.

The answer to 'how often' really depends on where you live and drive. I live in NE Ohio, it rains... a lot. So we don't have the road dust/dirt like people in the West. I also don't drive on dirt roads. I change my wiper blades more often than my air filters.

I change my air filter every spring. The car is my Wife's daily driver and our road trip car. We both work 2 miles from home, so we have to take the long way to work. We will have owned this Boxster S for 2 years on 12-31. So far we have put 27K miles on.

just changed mine. bought off Pelican. The old one looked good, but big difference in the old and new...I would say my last one was well over a year old for sure.

I change mine once a year, along with the cabin filter. No sense in taking any chances when the replacement is so cheap.

Cabin filter was $90 and the air filter was $60 at the dealer, after PCA discount!!!

I think I spent less than $40 on both cabin and air filter combined, and they were all German made! Got mine from Pelican and no complaints. :dance:

I got my air filter and cabin filter from Pelican as well after finding out floor mats $50 would cost $50 in shipping alone so decided it was Xmas coming up so got the above + oil filters
etc etc. Very happy with Pelican

You can pick up both filters for less than $30 at Pelican.

I recently changed mine myself for the first time (2002 986) with a filter from Pelican Parts. The cartridge required quite a bit force to slide and snap back in once I replaced the filter. I assumed this was because it was new. Anyone else experience that when changing filters?

Yes, it's a tight fit... I basically pulled the clip back on 1 side lifted up a tiny bit, then did the other side. Found it very hard to pull both clip and the cartridge out at the same time.
