Trouble is that on the 986 there's a layer of foam glued on top of the paper filter so you can't really inspect the elements unless it's cut open. Mine was well overdue so I'll definitely change it more often from now on.

I tear that off. Makes the intake a little louder and I do not believe anything gets through.
