Burning Oil Smell

While on a trip, my wife took my 2000 S out for a drive and when she came back she called me and said that she thought that she smelled oil burning when the car was came to a stop and was shut down. The car has 98K miles and has never leaked a drop in the two years that I have owned it. I am afraid to even start it, for fear of doing damage. Where should I start?
