While the rear case is in our machine

Yes. I document everything.. can't always find it when needed, but I document everything we do. I just don't share all of it

@ Brad Roberts: Wish there were people as knowledgeable as you and with your reasonable rates around where I live... Keep up the good work.

+1

I would have been happy to have this process done when I replaced that stupid little bushing!

Within the next few years, you will see a book released by a very popular EX Porsche employee. The title of that book will be something along the lines of "Surrounded by Idiots"

The book is about how the accountants took over Porsche in the early 90's..

Things like this bushing remind me of why that book was written.

Just an FYI:

Second gear will go out if those of you with this same problem (I'm receiving a lot of PM's about this) do not get it rectified quickly. The problem goes from a $600 fix to a $3000 fix very quickly.

and this is what I hear all the time... "oh, I'll buy a good used tranny"

and you will end up with the exact same issue in the not to distant future....

Brad,
You mean the infamous synchro will go out, the actual gear, or both? I suppose a bad synchro that goes unattended will eventually require second gear replacement too, though? I've also read about popping out of gear...

This is the precursor to the popping out of gear.

The slider will go bad first, then it will take out 2nd gear dog teeth (which are friction welded to the gear)

ask me how I know

$600 in the above pic alone.. add in the gear at $420 plus labor...
