Leak Around Transmission Linkage

I have had a small leak at the rear of the car for a long time, like a year or two. It appears to be getting worse. I got up under the car and it appears to be coming from where the transmission linkage joins the transmission. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,
Tom

It sounds like it could be the RMS (Rear Main Seal)...or worse the IMS. From my reading it is usually the RMS. What's the year and mileage of your car. The RMS can ooze for years and drip. My car is a 2000 'S' and had the old style seal, you might have it too. Mine wasn't dripping but when I went in to replace the IMS I could see the RMS had oozed slightly.

Tom,

I know what the problem is.. and you are not going to like it :(

Porsche will have you replace the entire tail section. We repair them.

I'll show you how we do it...

hang on

The bronze bushing is worn out were the shift selector enters the tranny (it's leaking from the side correct?) I'll post how we do it when Tom responds

Tired eyes from reading the yellowbird conversation :). So entertaining I couldn't stop reading...just wish I understood half of what they are talking about. Keep up the good help.

I think Brad has it nailed.
It's a $3 part that you can't access without removing the transmission.
Prepare yourself.
Have them check the syncho's while they're in there.

We pull the rear cover off with tranny in the car :)
We machine the case to accept a larger bushing.

tombea 01-20-2012 04:12 PM

That's it Brad. What will removing the tranny and replacing that bushing run?
By the way, thanks for your diagnosis. I'm sure that is the problem.

tombea 01-20-2012 04:17 PM

You're right Brad:-)). I'll be 72 my next birthday and bedtime gets earlier.

Brad Roberts 01-20-2012 04:41 PM

I hope I still have the Porsche "drive" when I'm 72!!!!

Porsche wants $645 for that rear cover (not including labor)

I fix them turnkey for $600 out the door.

The bushing Porsche utilized is too thin. It doesn't last. We bore out the hole and make our own press fit bronze bushing (factory used bronze, but it has no way to receive gearlube) We cut a spiral path in the new bushing for oiling, then install a new $4 seal. It's not the seal that is bad.. next step is second gear will go out because the shift selector cannot engage it properly do to the slop in the bushing.

While the rear case is in our machine :)

Yes. I document everything.. can't always find it when needed, but I document everything we do. I just don't share all of it :)

+1

I would have been happy to have this process done when I replaced that stupid little bushing!

Within the next few years, you will see a book released by a very popular EX Porsche employee. The title of that book will be something along the lines of "Surrounded by Idiots"

The book is about how the accountants took over Porsche in the early 90's..

Things like this bushing remind me of why that book was written.

Just an FYI:

Second gear will go out if those of you with this same problem (I'm receiving a lot of PM's about this) do not get it rectified quickly. The problem goes from a $600 fix to a $3000 fix very quickly.

and this is what I hear all the time... "oh, I'll buy a good used tranny"

and you will end up with the exact same issue in the not to distant future....

Brad,
You mean the infamous synchro will go out, the actual gear, or both? I suppose a bad synchro that goes unattended will eventually require second gear replacement too, though? I've also read about popping out of gear...

Brad Roberts 01-24-2012 06:09 PM

This is the precursor to the popping out of gear.

The slider will go bad first, then it will take out 2nd gear dog teeth (which are friction welded to the gear)

ask me how I know :)

$600 in the above pic alone.. add in the gear at $420 plus labor...
