Question 99 Boxster rear "Bowden" cable

What is the secret to replacing the rear trunk "Bowden" cable on a 986 Boxster? I have access to each end, thought I could attach the new cable to the old and pull it through. But I am not sure which way should I pull it, toward the trunk or toward the lever. Is there a better direction? However, it appears that it is fastened somewhere in the middle as the old cable will not budge either way. Or is there a better overall method for replacing it?
