Front End Control Unit - Need Help

I recently waxed my Boxster S 2006 and while polishing with micro-fiber towels I noticed a fair amount of static. On startup I got an electrics warning telling me to visit the dealer.

I took my car in to my local dealer Rusnak (Pasdena CA) who told me that the front end control unit needs to be replaced at a cost of about $500 (including labour). The strange thing is that the windows, mirrors, front trunk light all appear to function correctly.

Has anyone else experienced this? I found a similar post where someone suggested that the unit may just need re-programming with a PIWIS tester. I tried searching for the part/information but came up empty handed.

What are my options?
Are dealers the only folk who can fix this?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
