As rigid as the Boxster body is, I see it hardly started your problem, but maybe. The Boxster tops is controlled by one motor and a cable goes over to the other side to operate that side which I believe is the right side. Check the short push/pull arms that connect the frame to the motor. Maybe one is bent. It sounds like the top retracts with little resistance, but when you put it up, it is needing more amps under stress to raise the top or you have shorted it somewhere. As I hear it, this mechanism needs to be pretty well right on.
