You could try bleeding the clutch, some people have claimed improvements but there is no adjustment per se and what you have described is indicative of a worn clutch. Changing the clutch is the only sure way to get it to engage lower on the pedal.
EDIT: Air is never a good thing in a hydraulic system, do not listen to whomever gave you that advice.
