just had this same sound on my 98 and it was a combination of the wheel bearing failure which also spun in the wheel hub requiring replacement of both.

Wheel Bearing

Just had a wheel bearing replaced on my 2004 Boxster. Sounds like the same problem. My factory warranty covered it.
