oil change

Hello, I am new here. We just bought a 2000 porsche boxster and are very excited to have it. We are wondering how the oil is changed, if it has to be done at a dealership and about how much does it usually run?

any information would be great.

Yes the oil can be changed by youself or you can have the dealer do it for around150- 200 bucks. Many boxster owners do it themselves because it is an easy task to do. There is alot of info on this forum about that topic. Click on search and type in "change engine oil" or something to that tune and there should be a good deal of info that pops up. If have any difficulties finding what you need let us know.

Thank you for your reply. I have tried the search option with several different variations of changing oil but keep coming up with something to the effect of "must be at leat 4 words" could not get a singel topic to come up. any suggestions?

Yes, the search function requires at least 4 characters, but you can make some of them wildcards (like '*') to get around it... so to find anything that contains oil, you can search on oil*, which gets you these results:

I just changed the oil two days ago, it was so easy. You need a tool to remove the oil filter housing, you can use the porsche tool or a third party one. I used a tool (I don't know what it's called )which looks like a cylinder with a handle attached to it. I fit it around the housing, tightened it then unscrewed. Maybe tool pants knows the tool I'm talking about.

is that the filter wrench that i need to get for this? or will the old flip=floppy filter wrench to the trick as well?

If you have a strap type filter wrench that is the right diameter it will work.
