ready to begin my dream, or nightmare!

Hello, new member here from Hawaii. About to begin a life's dream of owning (done) and hopefully driving a 2001 boxster s. Long story but neglected outside for 6yrs, other than oil change and safety each year. Paid only 2k, BUT rear plastic leak has allegedly "fried the ECU". At some point the ecu kept locking and unlocking the driver door, burnt the motor. Now there seems to be a lockout with no electronics.
I know this could be a nightmare scenario, but in for the gamble. Prior owner believes the ecu can be removed and sent for diagnostic and ? repair as 1st step.
I suspect huge topic, what would be great is if any of you Pro's could speculate on first the possible extent of electrical gremlins i am about to unleash, and secondly are there any tips on the logical sequence to approach this?
She has not been towed to me yet, so other than exterior viewing, that's all I got, for now.
Many thanks, in advance
garry

Don’t buy it.

Have you already bought it?

If not, don’t.

Garage
It's probably not the ECU, but the control unit under the driver's seat. They get wet and die. The ECU is pretty well protected in the trunk.

Yes, correct.

The link I posted was for the guys that repair the under seat unit.

They also sell a waterproof box to put yours in before it gets flooded. I bought one and installed it.

Thanks!!

TO 10/10THS and NewsGuy: thanks for weighing in!
Yes, I have learned that the PO's diagnosis of ECU was wrong, it has to be the immobilizer, based on symptoms and location of water intrusion.
I understand this is a big gamble, but the rest seems solid and it drove to DMV this year, dreaming, I know.
Anyway, towing to me tomorrow, hoping to have some idea in a few days whether it is going to be an awesome Xmas, or a (nother) pile of metal to dispose of??????
No doubt will be leaning heavily on all of you, if there seems to be any hope of resurrection!
