Thinking of picking up this Boxster S this weekend. need input

I've been looking for a yellow boxster s for a while and I found a 2000 w/ 70k miles. He's asking $14k but there are two caveats. One is there is a tear in the rear window. I was reading the forums and it'll cost around $500 to replace the window. Second thing is he mentioned that the car hasn't been serviced in a while because it's been stored but it runs really good. I'm thinking it'll need a full tuneup once I pick it up. Looking around, it seems like that'll run about $800 or so. Now I'm going to definetely use that to negotiate the pricing. Is there anything else I should lookout for or check? Thanks!

You need to get a pre purchase inspection at a Porsche specialist. Not a dealer and not a general mechanic, but someone who works on Porsches extensively. They'll tell you what's good and bad with the car and what it would cost to fix.

The car you're talking about is a couple grand under market. I wonder why.

I bought a high mileage 2000 S a few months ago for $12k. I didn't get a PPI. I drove the car a long ways and went with my instincts. My top was good and there were receipts for recent repairs/service. The car was neglected cosmetically but a little buffing and TLC helped a lot.

If you are in a postion to get an inspection it would probably be a good idea. If the car feels good and drives well I would at least put in on a lift and check for oil leaks. It can be pretty expensive to fix the rear main seal, for example.

My car has subsequently required some work but nothing very expensive. If you like the car go for it. They're fun to drive.

Please do yourself a favor and get a PPI. It will be the best $250 you ever spent.

Remember there are no cheap Porsches. Any car that "hasn't been serviced in awhile" probably needs more than just $800 in work.

I put $2,500 in "service" into my $10,500 Boxster in the first 6 months to get the maintanence caught up and some of the "minor" things fixed. They all add up faster than you'll ever think possible.

Yes get a PPI. I walked away from several with either poorly taken care of back windows or cracked. Most cars I looked at with replacement windows were poor quality too and looked shabby. If you found someone that can replace it very professionally then you should negotiate that off the price. I bought my 2000 'S' with 53k miles for 15.8k last Nov and over paid a little because it needed tires immediately. I wanted Red though and better deals were a long drive to look at.
