1) Ask to see the underside of the front trunk to see the option code sticker.

2) Using that info, plus mileage, go to KBB or NADA or EDMUNDS and put the info in. My guess is the car was a trade in, and likely cost the dealer $11-12K. '98s are readily available in the $14K range, especially with perceived high miles.

3) Use the money you save by dickering to have the rear wing removed, the holes plugged and the trunk re-painted (or source one from a salvage yard)

4) Do a search on the board for the usual Boxster issues - RMS, IMS, Engine failures, CELs, Set belt interlocks, ignition failures and other niggling things.

5) Be sure to set aside 10-15% of the purchase price for maintenance items

6) Good luck getting a PPI. Unless you are the only one the dealer has seen with any interest in the car, they will let it sit till they find the "impulse buyer". Either that, or they sell it at auction.
