If you feel it's too much, you can first try to tighten the nuts a little more, but they should be pretty tight already. Second option is to add shims like the red ones. They are like fiber plumbing seals, and you can use thicker ones if you want.

I just bought a 3D printer and I'll see if I can make this better once and for all.

Ben, I appreciate your reply and look forward to your furthe update, plug-in fix!

For now I did slip in an additional shim but still side-to-side play is nowhere as tight as longitudinal play... and I’m still trying to get used to extra force to shift, while appreciating short stroke and precise feel.
