If you used the rear defrost would you be able to switch it on and off?

I too vote for the Porsche lettering and crest as displayed. Beautiful and classy.

Just throwing in these for inspiration. PM for the Illustrator/vector template if anyone is interested in making his/her own (I'll do those Made-to-Order no worries). Google "FREE VECTOR" for some ideas (tribal?)

I agree with the others, I vote for the crest and lettering

what about getting power from the "telephone" connector near the gearshift under the console? It has both switched and unswitched 12V

I think this would be easiest for most.
Me? I'd run it down to the "ashtray" light so that it comes on automatically with the headlights/interior lights

I hate to go against the grain, but my preference is the crest only. Simple and sweet!

The rear window defroster would be easiest but I'm not sure if it has 12V constant or switched power. You could even wire a splitter, and source the male/female plugs from Porsche. For the designs, I really like 'PORSCHE' along the bottom, because you would still be able to see out the rear view mirror.
EDIT: The defroster plug wiring harness is about $15, PN 986 612 081 01, likely a VW or Mercedes plug.
EDIT 2: The wiring diagram for the rear defroster plug is EWD-24 for MY '98-'00, two wires, brown and grey/green. Brown is obviously the ground, however the power (GN/GR) looks to be switched power.

Charles, thanks bro. Never thought about that ashtray 12v. Nice one man and exactly what I wanted to achieve (edge panel lights up when parking light/headlamps are turned on). That's how the clam's brake light came to mind.
Also like other's idea of having it switched on the defrost plug, if that's all feasible. Are you able to confirm that?
Decision decision....
A question I had for you is... let's say I want my edge panel to be 50% brightness when lights are ON and full 100% brightness when I hit the brakes. Anything you could design quickly... for those of us going "red" lol
(not sure if I understand how that clam's brake light intensity thingy is designed)

Yes, the crest and the lettering is the best, but are you allowed to use either without Porsche's approval?

Scary... why do I get the feeling you'll go tell them
The official product for the 986 & 987 you'll certainly see soon is, The "Skybreaker" (LOLLL). No-no Porsche branded mate.
Now whether "you" want to add a Porsche logo to your window, that is all up to you. Sure there are ways for me to etch a rainbow if you'd prefer.
(FREE and bright advertisement for Porsche, not sure who would complain there). Following the ebay concept of the flags, carpets, center caps, what else's there lol

I won't tell if you won't.

Thanks for all of your input and suggestions. After careful review of my options, I've decided to settle for this:
I think that will make my box look, sexy

Nah mate we know you wouldn't!
However, do feel concerned for Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, not for the OP! If you do find individuals using/replicating their high end technologies with ref. to PORSCHE then by all means, do report it. Raise it up...
Not for something that will only bring the "brand" max exposure. Which I'm pretty confident that my little edge panel is going to do just well in this respect.
On the legal aspect; Unfortunately it can't be legal to have non-DOT approved (made-in-china lol) Edge LED thingy on our cars so asking their legal advisor to guide you through the process (TM use request), I fear this could quickly become embarrassing. However very doable some will say, yes, in fact I know of one who've done it in AU for some aftermarket center caps.
In a meantime I promise to offer a wide range of beautiful Floral strains. Those from the south to those in Nordic regions - everybody wins!

I don't know what LEDs you're using, but if you're using color shift LEDs, here is what I'd like to see.
1. Powered on with the lights (using the ashtray light, or rear parking lights or what ever.
2. Have the ability to turn it off if I'd like to (maybe with a button in one of the blanks on the dash, or a switch in the center console)
3. Have the lighting change to Red when the brakes are applied (or a brighter red if you're already using red).
I think this could be really sweet.
BTW, this is my design choice:
Simple and still lets you see through the wind blocker.
I'm digging this thread.
Tony
